CMS Case Study

Easy Retrieval of Medical Records Has Improved Customer Service and Payments

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that certifies providers and insurance companies and manages payments under major government programs, has approved Laserfiche to store, index and retrieve mission- critical information in its 10 regional offices around the U.S.

The program, which covers records of authorized providers and co-payers, is being coordinated by Moshe Schneider of the CMS office in New York City. CMS is among the largest government agencies in the world and sets policies which regulate the $1.7 trillion dollar U.S. health care system.

Laserfiche was chosen due to its ability to scan records certifying health providers, such as doctors, hospitals and out-patient facilities, and participating insurance companies at the regional level, then make them retrievable by all 10 CMS regional offices and it headquarters in Boston. Laserfiche will also archive government health agency certifications at the state, county and local level.

“CMS was created to improve the customer service and payment of medical bills for over 60-million Americans covered under Medicare and Medicaid programs,” Schneider said. “One of our early mandates was to create a nationally accessible system of providers and insurers who have been certified to handle Medicare and Medicaid systems. CMS has designated Laserfiche to provide that system for our regional offices.”

Under the program, CMS central offices in Baltimore and Washington, DC and regional offices located throughout the United States - Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Kansas City, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle are installing Laserfiche systems to scan critical information on certified providers and insurance companies. The information will be available to administrators and those involved in processing claims on their desktops, significantly improving productivity.

“Our goal is to create simple and elegant document management solutions that help organizations to run smarter,” said Gerald Bengtson, Laserfiche president and COO. “What sets the CMS solution apart is the sheer volume of information to be scanned regionally and available to all nationwide. We are honored to be part of the CMS administration’s plan to provide better service to their customers.”
